Game changers

Someone I have a great deal of respect for shared a video with me several years ago. It was a little seen video called the 'game changers'. For some reason, it didn't reach a level where it was shared widely, which was a great shame as I think it could have been quite influential. Many of its participants were significant leaders in their chosen sports, who had achieved great things.

The one that encapsulated the entire film for me, was the story around Dick Fosbury. In short, he was struggling to compete with his fellow high jumpers and therefore needed something different. After much experimenting he created the 'back first' technique, which resulted in high jump gold at the 1968 Olympics. The bravery to try something different must have been almost stomach churning for him initially. He is now remembered as one of the most influential athletes in the history of track and field. I wonder how many had thought about this technique before him, but backed down.

Risk is such a big part of decision making. I gave a up a job to follow a dream / ambition. We've been reading my old school reports recently and it's funny how many 'lacks ambition' observations I received. I guess I didn't have ambitions as an historian, geologist, actor? I did have ambition elsewhere though and still do. I gave up another job which potentially had a lot of future ahead of it. I'm convinced I wouldn't have met my wife and children had I stayed in that job. Maybe I would have met someone else. Maybe the job would have swallowed me up as it was threatening to do?

Making big decisions demands some risk taking. Being afraid to try something must not be an obstacle. I always felt it was better to be caught mid off than silly point. Neither is great, both are errors, but at least one felt like I had tried harder. On another day, one results in a boundary, the other just another dot ball. Obviously, the two have to balance out and reckless risks are equally pointless. The intention has to be forward thinking though.

Greater minds than mine believe Virtual Reality is a game changer. It just seems logical to me. A mixture of deep visualisation and real life movements. A game changer? Time will tell....
